We dedicate our lives to the holistic growth of your child.
Founder and School Captain
My friends look at me like I'm crazy, having three kids and opening a school – it’s as if I don’t have enough to juggle on my plate already! I have always loved school as a child and wish all children to experience the same. Learning should be fun and experiential because life is all about experiences. My passion to understand and communicate with others (even animals!) made me fall in love with the art of linguistics. Being able to communicate in 5 languages and wishing to learn more, I have spent over a decade as an educator, a teacher trainer, a senior leader and a head teacher.
QUEK SUE YIAN
Crazy, wild, impulsive are words often used to describe me. If you ask me, the world is changing so fast we need a school that is fresh, nimble and unafraid to change course to suit the child or the times. We are not shackled by tradition and only have the best interest of the child at heart. I am a great believer that if you have a problem - solve it. Don't complain. Yes, the world can be scary and depressing but people can make a difference. Starting The Surin Academy was all guts and impulsion - we jumped legs first in the deep end without a life vest. Deep social change is coming: whether due to robots, climate change or something unforeseen; we need to face this with a school that has immutable values and the fluidity to shift with the wind - a way of doing things that is fearless without losing sight of integrity.
DR. ALIYAH BAHARUDDIN
The Doc in the House
I am a grandma trying to grow old in style and grace. My 'dinosaur' age has provided me a load of experiences dealing with human attitudes and behaviours during my days as a speaker, trainer, consultant and now a teacher. I realised very early in my career that my thumbprint of success was passionately helping past participants or students become more successful in their careers and personal lives. I strongly believe that perseverance, honesty and sincerity is the way of life. My guiding light is..… If you cannot reach for the stars, reach for the moon…., if you cannot be a road, be a trail……, and if you cannot be a tree, be a bush……, but whatever you choose to be….., be the best that you can be!
A naturalist at keeping peace, a foodie whose favourite ingredients include friendship and fellowship, and a popcorn muncher who loves The Green Mile, Remember the Titans, The Shawshank Redemption, Nanny Mcphee and Draft Day. I’m passionate in moulding and shaping the future generation through character building and instilling values with proper work ethics. Having had 15 years of experience with boring adults and 3 years of finding lost pencils in the classroom, my mission now is to equip students with the skills required to be a productive and efficient workforce of the future. “There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go.” - Nanny McPhee
The Animal Whisperer
If my life were a movie, it would feature fuzzy talking animals, colourful singing plants and long musical sequences. I believe that every student is the main character of his or her own stories. When students enter my classroom, we learn from one another and work hand-in-hand to complete quests along our learning journey. Having expertise in understanding the human mind and having worked in education for four years., to me, children learn when they are able to build their own bridges in fun and creative ways. As a teacher, I think that empathy and compassion are key ingredients in making the world a kinder place to live in. 'No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted' - Aesop.
The Zen Master
My family and friends thought (and still think) that I was nuts when I said that I had decided to teach children who bite, take off their clothes, hit their heads against the wall and much more. It is no easy feat but I love connecting with students who can’t seem to connect with the world. For the past 25 years and more years to come, I aim to be the bridge that helps students associate and thrive in society and in school. I wish for them to discover their voices and to be heard. What I do is food for my soul and that itself is an awesome feeling 'as feelings cannot be seen or touched but felt with the heart' - Helen Keller
Many have mistaken me as another student in school but I am actually a teacher with an old soul trapped in a young body who enjoys Julie Andrews ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’, Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Funny Valentine’ and P. Ramlee’s ‘Getaran Jiwa’. You can never separate me from J.J Abrams, James Cameron, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Russo Brothers, and Peter Jackson. I am always amused at the hilarious things that the students have said and done over the span of 12 months x 12 - I am the Master Yoda who believes in building a rock-solid platform for future Jedi Knights and in seeing them use their Force of talents, skills, and creativity to make the world a better place. 'A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defence, never for attack.' Master Yoda
The Number Cruncher
I love crunching numbers so much so that my passion led me to Liverpool, UK. My goal is to make my students enjoy learning and go crazy with it just like I do. I cannot understand why some people hate math, yet they love counting money! With my love for numbers, I hope to turn my students into mini mathematicians! I feel it is crucial for all my students, both juniors and seniors, to gain problem solving skills that they need in the future to navigate the adult world. 'Life is a math equation. To gain the most, you have to know how to convert the negatives into positives.”
The Colourful Maestro
I am an explorer! I am naturally inquisitive and love documenting onto a canvas my observations of anything and everything around me. My mission for the last 14 years in education has been to demonstrate to my students how they can see the world with not only the eye but also through the heart and mind. Just give them a brush and I will change their perception with beautiful colours! I love guiding the natural creativity in my students, both juniors and seniors since I believe that young people have raw talent and they need our undivided attention to shine. 'My life is my message' - Mahatma Gandhi
The Mad Scientist
Having mastered microbiological sciences through my passion and experience during my younger days, I have kept my children engaged with hands-on fun and interesting experiments such as making elephant's toothpaste. I am grateful for such fulfilling work and I keep myself up-to-date with the latest pedagogy and teaching methods. I do this so that I can better maximise my students' grasp of complex science concepts. 'Teaching science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge'. When i am not a teacher, I am also an experimental cook. I know my cooking is fabulous because ever so often, the smoke alarm cheers me on!
The Craft Wizardess
I am a person who does not know how to swim but am definitely an expert dumpster diver! I always turn trash into treasure and teach my students to do the same! The world needs massive lessons in environmental sustainability. I am also an educator who believes that teaching must come from the heart before instilling in children the love for lifelong learning. This is my passion and doing better everyday is my responsibility. I have taught varying age groups for the past 5 years. I love developing original teaching materials and teaching students to think 'outside the box'. Learning should be interesting and this can be achieved through hands-on activities, creative visuals, games, songs, 3D materials, outdoor activities, technology and web tools. My teaching philosophy is simple, 'Students do not care how much you know until they know how much you care'.
The Visual Master
I love keeping fit through rigourous workouts and body twisting yoga. I am a passionate teacher who takes on new challenges to be better everyday. I have the desire to accomplish any tasks and I hope to instill the same with my students who are usually only as tall as my knee. I love teaching children through creative art and craft interactive activities when they are at their foundation ages. My favourite quote from the little ones is 'Ms Alice in Wonderland is as cool as a cucumber!'.
